Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)
Position Summary
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) performs clinical and administrative duties within the scope of certification, state law, and clinic policies. The CMA supports efficient patient flow, quality patient care, positive patient outcomes, and an exceptional patient experience through patient intake, clinical procedures, education, scheduling, documentation, and coordination of care.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Obtain and document patient histories, vital signs, and other clinical information accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
Escort and prepare patients for provider visits, examinations, and treatments.
Prepare examination and treatment rooms and ensure appropriate supplies and equipment are available and maintained.
Administer medications, injections, immunizations, and treatments as ordered by the provider and permitted by state law and clinic policy.
Perform venipuncture, specimen collection, point-of-care testing, and other laboratory procedures as directed.
Schedule surgeries, pre-operative appointments, MRIs, CTs, laboratory services, and other patient appointments.
Respond to patient questions and concerns in person and by telephone, resolving issues appropriately and consulting providers as needed.
Document patient information, provider orders, clinical communications, and follow-up activities accurately in the EHR.
Process prescription refill requests, prior authorizations, referrals, and other clinical documentation as assigned.
Educate patients regarding medications, treatment plans, testing, procedures, and follow-up instructions within the scope of practice and as directed by the provider.
Maintain adequate inventory of medical supplies and notify appropriate personnel when replenishment is needed.
Follow infection prevention, OSHA, patient safety, confidentiality, and clinic policies at all times.
Maintain effective working relationships with patients, providers, and staff while demonstrating professionalism and strong customer service.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and other clinic programs.
Uphold the mission and values of clinic.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience: Minimum of two years of medical office experience preferred.
Certification/Licensure: Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent nationally recognized certification required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of medical terminology, clinical procedures, medication administration, injection techniques, specimen collection, and point-of-care testing.
Proficiency with EHR systems and medical office software.
Strong communication, active listening, telephone etiquette, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
Ability to educate patients regarding medications, procedures, treatment plans, and follow-up care within the scope of practice.
Ability to accurately obtain and document vital signs and clinical information.
Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices.
Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Ability to maintain strict patient confidentiality.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
